Doctors and medical professionals in a popular Reddit community did not hold back their criticism of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, who was recently shot and killed in a targeted attack. The backlash in the r/medicine subreddit became so intense that moderators were forced to delete a thread discussing Thompson’s death.
Sharp Criticism and Dark Humor
The original thread quickly gathered over 500 comments, many of which mocked UnitedHealthcare’s (UHC) controversial history of denying insurance claims. The top comment, written as a parody rejection letter, mocked the company’s reputation:
“After a careful review of your emergency claim for services on December 4, 2024, we regret to inform you that coverage is denied for failing to obtain prior authorization for your gunshot wound.”
Another user added a satirical touch:
“If you’d like to appeal this decision, please contact our hotline within 48 hours of your fatal injury.”
Some comments invoked famous quotes to convey disdain. One user paraphrased Clarence Darrow: “I’ve never wished a man dead, but I’ve read some obituaries with pleasure.”
Medical Professionals Weigh In
While many comments leaned into humor, others offered serious critiques of Thompson’s leadership at UHC. One doctor noted the widespread harm caused by the company’s practices, writing:
“I can’t even estimate how many years of life UHC has taken from patients through claim denials. His death doesn’t change that, but it’s hard to sympathize when so many have suffered under his leadership.”
Another doctor echoed this sentiment, saying:
“When profit takes precedence over human lives, it’s not surprising that others might devalue yours.”
Moderator Response
The moderators of r/medicine removed the thread, citing its “unproductive” nature, frequent policy violations, and the overwhelming number of inappropriate comments. However, they clarified that the decision wasn’t about protecting business practices, as criticism of the insurance industry is common in the subreddit.
UHC’s Troubled Reputation
Under Thompson’s leadership, UHC faced significant backlash for allegedly prioritizing profits over patient care. A report from ValuePenguin found that UHC denied about one-third of in-network claims, making it one of the worst performers in the industry.
The company was also recently criticized in a Senate report for allegedly denying post-acute care to boost profits. UHC’s parent company, UnitedHealth Group, reported $371 billion in revenue last year, while Thompson’s compensation totaled $10 million.
Investigation Update
Police have yet to determine a motive for Thompson’s murder, but NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the incident as a “premeditated, targeted attack.” Investigators discovered the words “deny,” “defend,” and “depose” on shell casings at the scene, possibly hinting at a connection to the insurance industry.
As the investigation continues, public reactions highlight the deep frustration and anger many feel toward America’s for-profit healthcare system.(*)
