Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot Wednesday morning in a shocking, targeted attack outside the Hilton Hotel in midtown Manhattan. Thompson, 50, had led the Fortune 500 company since April 2021 and was in New York for UnitedHealthcare’s 2024 investor conference.

The Incident

Around 6:45 a.m., Thompson was shot in the back and right calf by a masked gunman near W. 54th St. and 6th Avenue. The suspect, who appeared to be lying in wait, fled the scene on a bicycle heading toward Central Park. Thompson was rushed to Roosevelt Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The investor conference, set to take place at the Hilton Hotel, was immediately canceled. Andrew Witty, CEO of UnitedHealth Group, addressed attendees, saying, “We’re dealing with a very serious medical situation,” according to Bloomberg.

Statement from UnitedHealthcare

UnitedHealthcare released a heartfelt statement following the tragedy:
“We are deeply saddened and shocked by the passing of our dear friend and colleague Brian Thompson. Brian was a highly respected leader and friend to all who worked with him. We are cooperating closely with the NYPD and ask for your patience during this difficult time. Our hearts go out to Brian’s family and loved ones.”

Family Reveals Prior Threats

Thompson’s wife, Paulette, revealed that her husband had recently received threats, possibly linked to his role at UnitedHealthcare. “There had been some threats,” she told NBC News. “I don’t know details, but he mentioned that some people had been threatening him.”

Who Was Brian Thompson?

Thompson had been with UnitedHealth Group since 2004, serving in various leadership roles before becoming CEO of UnitedHealthcare in 2021. He previously led the company’s government programs division, overseeing Medicare & Retirement as well as Community & State programs.

A University of Iowa valedictorian and former CPA at PricewaterhouseCoopers, Thompson was known for his sharp intellect and commitment to the healthcare industry.

UnitedHealthcare, headquartered in Minnesota, is the largest private health insurer in the U.S., covering over 49 million people. The company employs more than 100,000 people globally and ranks fifth on the Fortune 500.

Investigation and Search for Suspect

Police believe the attack was targeted, though the motive remains unclear. The suspect, described as a 6-foot-tall man with a slim build, was last seen wearing a cream-colored jacket, black gloves, a black mask, and carrying a distinctive backpack.

Authorities are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the suspect’s capture. Witnesses told FOX 5 NY that the gunman appeared to have been waiting outside the hotel for hours, possibly overnight.

According to The New York Times, the shooter seemed to know Thompson’s routine, positioning himself near the entrance Thompson was expected to use. The suspect fired several shots from close range before fleeing on a bicycle.

A Tragic Loss

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz called Thompson’s death “horrifying” and a significant loss for the business and healthcare community. As the investigation continues, Thompson’s colleagues and loved ones are left mourning a leader whose impact was felt far beyond the boardroom.(*)
